Below left is a very rare B&W photograph of
King Canute's chair.
Legend has it that when King Canute became king of Denmark and England he
suddenly possessed powers that could push back the sea. There are famous
images of him doing just that, pointing a staff or palms raised towards the
waves, the sea receding.
Land between Moreton shore and
Leasowe is where this event is purported to have taken place. In recognition
of King Canute's achievements, the chair had inscribed along the seat back:
"Sea come not hither nor wet the sole of my foot".
Built in Victorian times, the said chair suffered a undignified end, vandalised and
used as firewood in the early 1950's.
An equally fascinating story is one of the Meols Viking Long ship, buried underneath a car Park in Meols.
