"The M53 and Moreton spur".

One of the greatest of road building 'crimes', the Moreton Spur has to be the biggest land grab for the shortest section of motorway ever. This was due to the fact that it was impossible to route it in an Eastwards direction, Bidston Hill had somewhat of the last laugh.

I would quite often see traffic backed up from where the spur joins Moreton Road all the way back to where the spur comes off the Southbound section of the M53. In this picture you can see a few tail lights and headlamps up at the Moreton end of the spur. However, on many occasions at rush hour the junction would be solid red taillights and even white front beams going to Liverpool Northbound M53 all the way along this part of the M53. I also believe that this spur is a notorious black spot in bad weather; likely due to the hazardous nature of it's dangerous spur curve, which is always heavily gritted.
