King Canute's chair

Below left is a very rare B&W photograph of King Canute's chair.
Legend has it that when King Canute became king of Denmark and England he suddenly possessed powers that could push back the sea. There are famous images of him doing just that, pointing a staff or palms raised towards the waves, the sea receding.

Land between Moreton shore and Leasowe is where this event is purported to have taken place. In recognition of King Canute's achievements, the chair had inscribed along the seat back:
"Sea come not hither nor wet the sole of my foot".
Built in Victorian times, the said chair suffered a undignified end, vandalised and used as firewood in the early 1950's.

An equally fascinating story is one of the Meols Viking Long ship, buried underneath a car Park in Meols.
