"From brick to rock"
A fact often overlooked is that Bidston
Observatory is quarried from the very ground it stands upon. A quarry line can
clearly be seen on the NE side of the observatory, other quarry lines permeate
out onto the hill, the infamous card player with knife in his back can be seen
beyond the NE wall of the observatory.
The basement of Bidston Observatory
is a place of several layers, a stairwell down to the main floor, then a
further stairwell. There are also some rooms that meander off into the
bedrock, brick literally meets rock, with some bizarre -shaped rooms and
recesses. In many ways it looked like a film set down there.
